Red Sox Fans Will Love Who Was Most Amped For Masataka Yoshida Homer. This weekend's series against the New York Yankees was huge for the Boston Red Sox, and they made a huge statement Friday night. After a rain delay at Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Bombers seemed to have the first matchup sealed. Closer Clay Holmes gave his team a 99% chance of winning after he got two outs in the ninth inning, according to ESPN analytics. Juan Soto and Aaron Judge were shut down, and Ceddanne Rafaela delivered the go-ahead two-run home run in the 10th inning that sealed Boston's 5-3 win.

Padres' clutch hitting becoming the norm, to D-backs' detriment. The way Manny Machado figured it, a one-run deficit going into the bottom of the ninth wasn't a big deal, even if the San Diego Padres had just blown a 7-2 lead Friday night against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. San Diego has won 10 of its last 11 games at home, five in walk-off fashion. Machado's blast was the Padres' fourth walk-off homer since June 11.

Seth Lugo will make another audition to be the American League's starting pitcher in the All-Star Game when the Kansas City Royals visit the Colorado Rockies on Saturday in Denver. Luis Castillo limited Toronto to two hits over a dominant 6 2/3 innings, Luke Raley had a two-run double in the third and the Seattle Mariners beat the Blue Jays 2-1 on Friday night. Castillo (7-9) was nearly untouchable in his 200th career start, retiring each of the first nine Blue Jays hitters, and not allowing a hit until Kevin Kiermaier hit a solo home run with one out in the sixth. Castillo's only blemish before Kiermaier's homer was a leadoff walk to Toronto first baseman Spencer Horwitz in the fourth inning.

Albert Suárez struck out six in six sharp innings and won back-to-back outings for the first time all year, pitching the Baltimore Orioles past the Oakland Athletics 3-2. The right-hander (5-2) surrendered Miguel Andujar’s first-inning home run but settled in to hold down an A’s lineup coming off consecutive 5-0 shutouts and a series sweep of the Los Angeles Angels. Suárez allowed two runs on four hits and walked one as the Orioles won for the seventh time in nine games. Shea Langeliers also homered for Oakland. Hogan Harris took the loss.

Corey Seager extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-run double and Michael Lorenzen combined with four relievers on a three-hitter as the Texas Rangers blanked the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0. Seager doubled into left-center field gap after consecutive two-out singles in the third inning Friday night. Nathaniel Lowe then drove in Seager with a single. Lorenzen gave up one hit and struck out four, but walked five in his five innings. Rays right-hander Shane Baz struck out six over six innings in his first big league start since July 10, 2022.

Alex Bregman had a three-run homer and the Houston Astros held off the Minnesota Twins 13-12 on Friday night after taking an eight-run lead into the bottom of the ninth. Jeremy Peña had three hits, scored three times and drove in three runs to help the Astros win for the 13th time in 5 games. They are a major league-best 21-9 since June 1. Down 13-5 after Houston scored three times in the ninth, the Twins fell just short with a seven-run outburst. Josh Hader came on with two outs and gave up a grand slam to Carlos Correa before striking out Manuel Margot for his 15th save. Twins designated hitter Jose Miranda went 4 for 4, setting a team record with 10 straight hits.

Skenes improved to 5-0 with a 2.15 ERA after working seven strong innings in a victory over the New York Mets. The 22-year-old is the first pitcher in major league history to record at least seven strikeouts in nine of his first 10 starts. Contreras struck out with one out in the 11th and Winn on third against Dylan Floro, but the ball got past catcher Riley Adams. In the ninth, Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan left a 2-2 fastball over the middle of the plate to Contreras, who sent it 407 feet over the wall in right-center to make it 5-all.

Mother of big league Lowe brothers sees them face each other for 1st time since her cancer diagnosis. There is a Lowe family reunion this weekend in Texas. The mother of big league players Nathaniel and Josh is getting to watch her sons play against each other for the first time since being diagnosed with brain cancer last year. Wendy Lowe was unable to attend at Tampa Bay last October when Nathaniel Lowe and the Texas Rangers played against younger brother Josh and the Rays in an AL Wild Card playoff series. She was going through chemotherapy then. When the two teams met in Florida the first week this season, neither brother played because both were on the injured list.

LOS ANGELES, CA (WSAU) — Rhys Hoskins hit a grand slam in the 4th inning but Will Smith stole the show with three homers in an 8-5 Dodger win on Friday. Hoskins' four-run blast was one of four hits on the night for the Brewers and part of a five-run fourth that gave them a brief 5-2 lead. Los Angeles got two back in the bottom of the frame on a two-run shot from Miguel Vargas. The Dodgers put the game out of reach in the 8th. Willy Adames, Jackson Chourio, and Brice Turang also recorded hits for the Crew. Hoskins was the only one with an extra-base hit. Aaron Civale got the start and went five innings but didn't factor in the decision. Elvis Peguero took the loss after he started the 8th inning

Paul Skenes threw seven strong innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates tied a franchise record by smashing seven home runs in a 14-2 demolition of the New York Mets. Bryan Reynolds homered from both sides of the plate, including a grand slam, and Rowdy Tellez had a grand slam among his two homers. They became the first teammates in major league history to each hit multiple homers including a grand slam in the same game. The 22-year-old Skenes allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and eight strikeouts while his ERA ticked up slightly to 2.12.

Luis Robert Jr. had two hits, two walks and two stolen bases for the White Sox, who won their first opening game of a road series this season. The Marlins lost their fifth straight and dropped to an NL worst 30-58. Thorpe (3-1) pitched into the seventh for the first time since being promoted from the minor leagues June 11. The rookie scattered three hits, walked two and struck out five. Bryan Hoeing (0-1) took the loss.

Trea Turner hit a pair of two-run home runs off Max Fried, Aaron Nola earned his 100th career victory and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 8-6 on Friday night. The NL East-leading Phillies extended their lead over second-place Atlanta to 10 games by winning the opener of the weekend series. Nola (10-4) retired Atlanta’s first 10 batters before giving up a one-out single to Ozzie Albies in the fourth inning. Austin Riley followed with a two-run homer to center field. Albies had three hits, including a homer, and Marcell Ozuna added a three-run shot in the eighth off José Alvarado. Nola improved to 100-75 in his career. He gave up three runs with eight strikeouts in six innings.

Rookie Colt Keith homered twice, Parker Meadows and Riley Greene also went deep and the Detroit Tigers held off the Cincinnati Reds 5-4. Meadows led off the third with a 410-foot homer to right field. After Reds center fielder Stuart Fairchild’s catch robbed Matt Vierling of an extra-base hit, Keith hit one out to almost the same spot as Meadows in the right-field seats. Keith then had a two-run shot in the fifth, and Riley Greene led off the seventh with his team-leading 17th homer, another deep shot to right field.

Miranda eclipsed the Twins record of nine hits in a row set by Tony Oliva in 1967 and matched by Mickey Hatcher in 1985 and Todd Walker in 1998. The major league record for consecutive hits is 12. The 26-year-old Miranda entered the game against the Houston Astros with hits in six straight trips to the plate and had hits in each of his four times up before he was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning. Miranda was 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs and raised his batting average to .324.

There is a Lowe family reunion this weekend in Texas, where the mother of big league brothers Nathaniel and Josh is getting to watch her sons play against each other for the first time since being diagnosed with brain cancer last year. Wendy Lowe was unable to attend at Tampa Bay last October when Nathaniel Lowe and the Texas Rangers played against younger brother Josh and the Rays in an AL Wild Card playoff series. The family was able to be together when the teams met for a series in Florida the first week of this season, but neither brother played then because both were on the injured list with oblique strains.

Brock Stewart, who has been lights-out when he pitches, had a successful live bullpen session before Friday night's game against the Houston Astros at Target Field and appears close to a rehab assignment. Justin Topa, who has yet to pitch for Minnesota since being acquired in the deal that sent Jorge Polanco to Seattle in January, will throw a bullpen on Saturday morning and said his injured left knee feels better since getting a platelet-rich plasma injection in mid-May. Topa, who was diagnosed with a partial tear to his patellar tendon, had the PRP injection after his first attempt at rehab was unsuccessful.

Yankees close to upgrading infield from within as injured veteran takes next step in rehab. Losing Giancarlo Stanton to the injured list last month was a crippling blow to the middle of the Yankees' lineup. Production in the cleanup spot since the designated hitter strained his hamstring has been dreadful, a glaring lack of protection in the order behind superstars Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. A case can be made that Jon Berti's injury in late May was just as destructive. Just look at the way the Yankees' infield has produced since Berti strained his left calf running out of the box in San Diego on May 24.
