7/05/24 This KC Royals assistant hitting coach has brought fresh approach to batting cage. Kansas City Royals hitting coach Alec Zumwalt knew just the man to call. After a franchise-worst 106 loss campaign last season, the Royals were plagued with a lackluster offense. Strikeouts were a major issue and the entire offense looked noncompetitive at times. The Royals batted .244 as a team with a 23.3 strikeout percentage in 2023.

8/05/23 Royals’ Matt Quatraro, Alec Zumwalt ejected after iffy strike 3. Was it the right call?. The Royals strongly disagreed with a call in the ninth inning on Saturday. It contributed to their win streak being snapped.

4/26/23 A new light on the 2023 Royals, and how it might all work out. The 2023 season as an evaluation year isn't entirely about evaluating if these players can be big league players. It is also about evaluating how good the players can apply the ideology behind what the Royals' new coaching staff wants to create. The Royals have completely reshaped the way they view pitching at an organizational level just a season after they began to do the same thing with their hitting process. Last year they promoted Alec Zumwalt to hitting coach.

5/18/22 Prospect News: Royals Barbecue Hitting Coach or Moore Needs Sauce. This week began with big news adjacent to the prospect realm: Kansas City fired its major league hitting coach, Terry Bradshaw, and replaced him with Senior director for player development and hitting performance, Alec Zumwalt, whose role will be bigger than that of a typical major league hitting coach. The Royals have seen big gains in the minor league hitters that haven’t carried over to the big league side, so this move makes a lot of sense from the outside looking in.  Reading between the lines, the goal here includes creating synthesis throughout the system from the bottom up. One way the Giants and Dodgers have gotten ahead the past few seasons is having multiple voices saying similar things all the way up the development chain, so that when a young Dodger makes the majors, he’s not suddenly learning a new way to talk about the game at the same time as he’s adapting to the extreme leap in skill from AAA to MLB pitching.  In short, this feels like good news for all Kansas City prospects but especially those with solid plate skills. In his press conference, team President Dayton Moore said, “We need to see nine players in our lineup that are committed to get on base any way possible. That means we cannot chase pitches out of the strike zone. When we do have pitches to hit in the strike zone, we can’t miss them.” Pretty good summation of baseball 101 there, but manager Mike Matheny seems due for a refresher every now and then, as he continues to run Ryan O’Hearn out there in the cleanup role for reasons that no human on the planet except Matheny can comprehend.

1/28/22 Royals Rumblings - News for January 28, 2022. David Lesky at Inside the Crown, of course, talks about how the Royals minor league pivoted from “pitching-rich” to “hitting-rich”: I can’t do the change justice the way Alec Lewis did in The Athletic back in August, so I’d recommend reading that, but Alec Zumwalt, Drew Saylor, Mike Tosar and Keoni DeRenne took things over. You might have recognized a couple of those names as part of the group who worked with guys like Perez and Jorge Soler before his breakout season.
