Ryne Nelson had dirt on his uniform pants, a skinned knee from sliding and a grin on his face. It was quite a day for the Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher and it came at the plate. Nelson hit a bouncing ball through the infield for an RBI single in the middle of the D-backs’ eight-run eighth inning in a 10-6 comeback win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. It was the pitcher’s first plate appearance, hit and RBI of his big league career. Nelson had been in manager Torey Lovullo’s ear for the better part of two years saying that he would get a hit if they ever needed him at the plate. Sure enough, he delivered.

3/30 7:10 PM Jarren Duran (OF-BOS) How Texas Rangers starter Jacob deGrom changed it up in season debut against the Red Sox. Jacob deGrom's first strikeout of the season came by way of his changeup. The 36-year-old threw 11 changeups in his five-inning season debut vs. the Boston Red Sox on Saturday and used it to strikeout both Jarren Duran and Alex Bregman in the second inning of the Texas Rangers' 3-2 series-clinching win. Here's why that's notable: deGrom threw just 10 changeups in three starts last season and got strikeouts with it just twice.

Nick Pivetta allowed just one hit over seven shutout innings Sunday as the San Diego Padres completed a four-game sweep of the visiting Atlanta Braves with a 5-0 win. Orlando Arcia lined a single to right to lead off the third, but a double play ball off Chadwick Tromp's bat ended the inning. Jason Adam and Jeremiah Estrada finished the shutout as San Diego blanked Atlanta over the final 22 innings of the series.
